At Stena Line, we take safety very seriously. Let’s talk about transporting specialised goods at sea.

There are many aspects that need to be considered when transporting goods e.g., hazardous goods. Not only is the right documentation needed, but the transportation vehicles must have explicit signage for the goods it is carrying.

Hazardous goods are regulated under The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. Some of the goods that are controlled are flammable items, corrosive substances, and different types of acids. The IMDG code is developed to secure safe maritime transport of these goods, covering aspects such as packaging, container traffic and stowage, and to prevent pollution to the environment.

The freight driver and shipper are responsible for having the original hazardous documentation upon arriving at the port. They are also responsible to ensure that the proper placards for shipment by sea are visibly placed on the vehicle to mark the goods inside. All documentation and placards are checked by our personnel in the terminal before the shipment onboard our vessels. If the documentation for the shipment is insufficient, onboarding may be refused.
